Do you only work with couples?

No. In addition to working with couples I also see families and individuals experiencing relationship stress.

How do we know whether to seek couples counseling or individual counseling?

Marriage and couples counseling consist of interventions which focus on helping couples develop a more satisfying, harmonious relationship. Unlike individual-oriented therapy, which may also explore problems individuals experience in their relationships, couples therapy focuses on the relationship as the core problem—not the individual. It's also based on the premise that through the exploration into our relationships we inevitably discover more about ourselves, and as we discover more about ourselves, we ultimately grow stronger in our relationships.

If you are experiencing problems in your relationship or marriage, couples counseling is a great place to start. In some cases I will encourage one or both partners to seek individual therapy with another provider, usually in conjunction with the couples work, to focus on targeted issues requiring more intensive individual attention.

What are your qualifications

I am a Maryland licensed and board-certified clinical social worker with specialization in marriage and family practice. I have over 17 years of clinical experience and I have met with over 600 couples and families.

Can you describe what your sessions consist of?

Sessions vary greatly depending on the presenting issues and the individuals involved. I generally begin with a joint assessment that includes an evaluation of past and present concerns as well as exploring your future relationship goals. As part of the assessment I generally allow some time to meet individually with each partner to gain greater insight into personal concerns and circumstances that may be impacting the relationship. A course of treatment is then developed, usually by the second session, that may include a combination of joint and individual meetings. I offer insights into your relationship and suggest tools that facilitate greater understanding, facilitate stronger communication, and enhance intimacy.

How many sessions will we need?

An average course of treatment is seven to ten sessions although couples have reported considerable relief in as few as three or four sessions. In many situations couples have opted to continue in therapy for extended periods of time to deal with more complex and persistent concerns or to focus on greater relationship enhancement. Following an initial coarse of treatment sessions are generally spread out to avoid backsliding until we agree to conclude our work together.

Do you accept insurance?

I currently accept Johns Hopkins EHP, US Health and most Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance plans. I encourage you to contact me to discuss your individual plan and coverage details.

Do you have weekend and evening hours?

Yes.
